How to Wear Flares

DSC_0569

There’s a trend currently making a comeback that I (and my fellow Glitter Guide editors, mind you) am super excited about: the revival of 70’s style! And although I won’t be ditching my skinny jeans anytime soon, flared denim has definitely stolen my heart this season. Today I want to share you some tips for buying the most flattering fits and styling them just right.

Find a fit that hits the floor.
These pants are meant to graze the ground—in fact, your shoes should barely be visible! When you head to the store to find your flares, be sure to bring along the shoes you plan to wear with them. Take the same shoes to the tailor if you end up going to get your denim hemmed. My favorite flares are from Madewell, which—bonus!—happens to offer free hemming on all its jeans. Trust me: The end result is worth the extra time and effort!

Wear the right shoe.
This will depend slightly on how tall you are already—but with flares, a platform shoe is almost always the way to go. In all of these photos, I’m wearing Michael Kors wedges. They provide a lot of height (this is especially important to me since I’m short!) but are also incredibly comfortable—a win-win!

Go for high-rise jeans.
The leg-lengthening magic of high-rise jeans is unreal. For an extra-slimming look, pair a darker-wash denim with a black top.

Have fun with tops and accessories.
Once you get the jeans just right, you have a lot of freedom to experiment with the other elements of your ensemble. Try a slightly cropped tee with a clutch for date night. A casually tucked-in chunky knit with a tassel necklace for happy hour. A button-down with a crossbody bag for running errands. Almost everything looks great with the perfect pair of jeans—don’t you think?

Hi, Natalie! I saw that flares were coming back, but I wasn’t really sure how to add them to my current wardrobe! Thank you for showing a few different ways for them to be worn! :-)

You look awesome in flares! I especially love the white sweater look. I don’t think flares are for me because I don’t like to wear heels and am usually found in flats. I feel like flares were made for wedges and I am just not comfortable with that!

Thanks Victoria! Yes, flares definitely are best with wedges and not so much with flats. It’s good to know when to just skip a trend if it doesn’t work with your lifestyle!

LOVE this, Nat. I am definitely trying on some Flea Market Flares when I pop into Madewell later this week :).
