Facing Beauty Fears

image10

At the beginning of July, I got an email from Glitter Guide’s editorial director Caitlin asking me if I might be interested in tackling their next sponsored post for Old Navy. I was told I would get to keep the clothes I styled and hire a friend to snap the photos—two things that sounded great to me—but then I saw what my topic was: shorts and tees.

You might recall one of my recent blog posts on the topic of shorts. In a nutshell, I’m not really a fan. Not because shorts are ugly, but because I rarely feel beautiful when I personally wear them. I felt conflicted—I knew doing the post would be a really great opportunity and challenge for me, but I also knew that I’d have to face my big fear of shorts head-on—and be photographed, as well. Totally scared and unsure, I decided to face my fear and commit.

I’d be lying if I said the whole thing was a piece of cake from there. Truth be told, I tried on every pair of adorable shorts at Old Navy, but of course saw nothing but lies in the mirror. There were so many shorts to choose from, all in beautiful prints and patterns (seriously, Old Navy has stepped things up!), but I decided on the linen drawstring shorts in black and white if for no other reasons than that they were practical and comfortable.

Once I had my complete outfits done, I set up a photo shoot with my friends and neighbors who also happen to be amazing photographers—Stone and Shelby of Stone Crandall Photography. I felt so awkward when we started the shoot, letting all of my fears of looking ridiculous for this Glitter Guide post seep into my mind and take away from the experience. Thankfully, Stone and Shelby provided great direction and lots of encouragement, and within 30 minutes I was relaxed and having a great time.

In the end, I’m so glad I didn’t let my beauty and body fears intimidate me. I’m thankful that I chose to rise to the challenge and face some of my personal insecurities for the sake of a great opportunity. Not only am I pleased with the final outcome, but more so I’m pleased that I didn’t let the lies in my head win. I chose real beauty, knowing that no matter how I looked in the photos, my beauty was not based on my ability to look sexy in shorts.

When have you faced your own beauty or body fears?
