As you may recall, I’ve been fighting an uphill battle with eczema since I was 16, and it’s gotten a lot worse over the past couple of years. Earlier this year, my dermatologist gave me great recommendations, which helped a little bit, though I still found myself scratching and itching regularly, never feeling total relief. Thus, I embarked on an experiment…
Based on the recommendation of my friend Nicole, who found relief from her migraines through discovering food sensitivities, I decided to try a food elimination in hopes of nailing down a trigger that was contributing to my eczema. I learned through a bit of research that common food triggers could be gluten, corn, soy and peanuts (also eggs and dairy, though I already don’t eat those). For two weeks, I carefully avoided all four of those foods, and was pleasantly surprised to see that my eczema patches completely disappeared.
Once I knew that one of those foods was the trigger, I experimented with adding them back in. I didn’t seem to have a problem with gluten, corn or peanuts (thankfully!), but much to my dismay, it looked like soy was the trigger. Just to be certain, I eliminated soy once more (and my eczema disappeared again), and then added it back in, only to see my eczema return again.
All that to say, this officially marks the end of my relationship with soy, which is pretty devastating considering that Japanese food is my favorite cuisine and soy is what I like in my morning coffee.
The transition has been okay—switching over to unsweetened coconut milk in my coffee, finding soy-free breads and more importantly, chocolates, and overall I’m just so relieved to have found a cause behind my endless skin rashes, and am feeling empowered now that I know what was behind the outbreaks.
Moving forward, I promise to never complain about this new food allergy—because I know how lucky I am to have solved the problem I’ve had for so long!
Do you have any food allergies or sensitivities? How have them impacted your life?
