Out With It by Katherine Preston has been so good (I’m working on finishing it up this week), and I’m so eager to dive into next month’s book, which is one I’ve had my eye on for a while. So, with just a few days left in the month of August, it’s time to announce the book club pick for September… This coming month, we’ll be reading Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. It’s a book that is all about vulnerability—something I strive for in my own life, but am admittedly super afraid of. Here’s a bit more about the book, courtesy of Amazon: Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable, or to dare greatly. Whether the arena is a new relationship, an important meeting, our creative process, or a difficult family conversation, we must find the courage to walk into vulnerability and engage with our whole hearts. In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on twelve years of research, she argues that vulnerability is not weakness, but rather our ...]]> 2 Non-Fiction Book Club: August Pick Wed, 24 Jul 2013 12:00:00 +0000 July is coming to a close next week and that means it’s time to finish up reading What Remains, and start diving into a brand new book club pick for August. While watching the Today Show at the gym earlier this month, I saw a compelling interview with an author named Katherine Preston who had a very interesting story to tell. Her book, Out With It: How Stuttering Helped Me Find My Voice, is our pick for the month of August, and a story I’m eager to read now that I’ve gotten a sense of her charming personality thanks to the Today Show interview. From Amazon… A vividly powerful memoir of a young woman who fought for years to change who she was until she finally found her voice and learned to embrace her imperfection. Imagine waking up one day to find your words trapped inside your head, leaving you unable to say what you feel, think, want, or need. At the age of seven that happened to Katherine Preston. From that moment, she began battling her stutter and hiding her shame by denying there was anything wrong. Seventeen years later, exhausted and humiliated, she made a life-changing decision: to ...]]> 0 Wanderlust: Dallas Wed, 03 Jul 2013 12:00:00 +0000 The following is a guest post by my dear friend and former college roommate, Rachel Johnson. She’s the Director of Project Development for the Touch A Life Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of exploited and trafficked children in West Africa and Southeast Asia. She lives in Dallas, TX—hence her expertise on the city—and can be found blogging at Through Painted Deserts. I was anxious to move to Dallas from Los Angeles when the opportunity presented itself nearly four years ago—I had never set foot in the Lone Star State. Was it everything it was cracked up to be? And, specifically, was Dallas a place I could call home? Looking back now, I know God had a very intentional plan for me and my life, and that the amazing city of Dallas was meant to play an integral role in who I became and what I pursued. This town has become one of my most favorites in the world, and here are a few reasons why: White Rock Lake I have a serious affinity for White Rock Lake, a beautiful body of water surrounded by 10 miles of biking and running paths. It is the perfect ...]]> 0 Non-Fiction Book Club: September Pick Mon, 24 Jun 2013 12:00:00 +0000 0 Non-Fiction Book Club: July Pick Mon, 24 Jun 2013 12:00:00 +0000 0 6 Great Summer Cookbooks Tue, 11 Jun 2013 12:00:00 +0000 0 Non-Fiction Book Club: June Pick Wed, 29 May 2013 12:00:00 +0000 0 It’s All Good Tue, 28 May 2013 17:06:00 +0000 Ever since it was released, I’ve been absolutely dying to get my hands on a copy of Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook It’s All Good. So you can imagine my delight when my friend Kayla showed up last night for dinner with that very book, wrapped up with a bow, as a housewarming gift! Needless to say, I spent the better half of this morning poring over every page, and I’m even more excited about it than I was when I first learned about it. Though this is not a vegan cookbook, I’m delighted to say that there are a ton of vegan recipes (all labeled as vegan) in this book. From Quinoa Granola With Olive Oil + Maple Syrup and Buckwheat + Banana Pancakes to Baked Beans with Maple + Molasses and homemade Sriracha sauce, this book is filled to the brim with nutritious, whole, healthy and hearty foods. There are even recipes for a flourless crumble, cheesecake, and a tasty brownie—none of which include white sugar or dairy. Just a few snapshots of vegan breakfast recipes—granola, avocado toast and scrambled tofu. What I really love about this book is its philosophy: that our bodies deserve nutritious, wholesome foods and that ...]]> 2 3 Ways To Look Stylish While Traveling Fri, 24 May 2013 12:00:00 +0000 Below is an article I did for Glitter Guide this week, featuring three ways to be comfortable and stylish while traveling this summer.
