THE MATERNITY WARDROBE Buying maternity clothes is a bit depressing since you really only get to wear them for a short while—all while your body is growing at an exponential rate. So, when pregnant, I recommend abiding by two rules. Rule #1: Black is a pregnant woman’s best friend. Rule #2: Minimal clothes, maximum accessories. Consider the season you’ll be pregnant to determine your basics, and buy things that can mix and match. Personally, I recommend getting a lot of things in black because it really is flattering on the pregnant body, and it’s so easy to wear over and over again. My two absolute must-haves? A pair of black leggings to wear under long tops and around the house, a black maxi dress, and a black swing dress. Brian and I didn’t do engagement photos before our wedding and this sort of felt like a similar, unnecessary thing on the checklist of to-dos. But of course, much like how our anniversary shoot went down, my dear friend Ashton offered to snap some photos of us while they were visiting us over the 4th of July and I couldn’t resist. When Ashton asked where I thought I’d like to have the photos taken, I didn’t hesitate—the beach, of course! Specifically, my favorite local spot: Cardiff State Beach. I knew I wanted the photos to look very natural and not teeter into the cheesy category. After seeing a very similar shoot on On to Baby (shot at the very same beach, in fact), I sent the inspiration photos to Ashton and went in search of a big, floppy hat. Thanks, Ashton, for capturing Brian and I during such a special time in our lives. These will be cherished forever! Photos by Ashton Swan for Thoughts by Natalie]]> 4
