Thoughts By Natalie A blog about simple + stylish living by jewelry designer Natalie Borton Tue, 23 May 2017 21:59:49 +0000 en-US hourly 1 A New Chapter Fri, 21 Apr 2017 22:13:17 +0000 Hey friends! It’s been a while since I’ve been here on the blog and that’s because I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. In a nutshell, this is the last time I’ll be posting here on Thoughts by Natalie. It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to this space I’ve had for so long, but it’s not the end of my blogging life completely! In fact, I’m so excited to be starting something brand new and wanted to share a little bit about it here for those of you who may not follow along on Instagram and have gotten the full update. The truth is, I’ve felt a bit disconnected from this blog  since I started my jewelry business and have been debating whether to keep it or start fresh for at least a year now. This is a blog I started when I was a completely different person, in a different place, with different interests. Since becoming a mother and a designer, I’ve felt less connected to my identity as a “lifestyle blogger” and more of a desire to focus on my core business. My biggest fear was losing my solid readership base since I’ve had this blog going on for so many years, […]]]> 1 VETTA Capsule Fri, 24 Mar 2017 16:34:06 +0000 I really hope the off shoulder trend never ends—I love how flattering and feminine it is! I first fell in love with it with this piece (a total steal from Old Navy last year) and have since continued to add more of this silhouette to my wardrobe. It works really well with denim, which is an essential for me since that’s basically what I wear everyday, and it also lends itself to our generally warm California weather. The one I’m wearing here was designed by my friends at VETTA Capsule for Saks and can be worn 3 different ways—the way I have it, tied at the waist, or reversed with buttons in the back. Speaking of VETTA, their new classic capsule just launched yesterday and I have to say, it is PERFECTION. The collection features 5 pieces, from which you can make 30 outfits. That’s what dreams are made of, friends. They’re currently offering all 5 pieces for only $415, so if capsule wardrobes and classic styles are your jam you’ll want to check that out for sure. The rest of this outfit is pretty standard for me—I swear I wear these jeans 5 days a week. Some of these won’t be new to you, as I’ve definitely shared a few of them before. Others are newer finds that I’m feeling excited about and really enjoying. These are the skin, hair and makeup products I can’t get enough of lately… Glossier Boy Brow, $16 This is a forever favorite because it’s really just the best product I own! I’ve been hooked since the moment I tried it and recommend it to everyone. Even with my microbladed brows now, I wear it in brown, and for friends with naturally amazing brows looking to groom rather than add tint/fullness, the new clear version is perfect. Beautycounter Cleansing Balm, $80 Much like Boy Brow, this is another miracle product that I’ve become a fast fan of. When I first got it, I’d use it to remove my makeup, but lately I use it as an ultra-moisturizing overnight mask. The price tag of this may be scary, but it really does last so long because a little goes a long way! Beautycounter Dew Skin, $45 Now that it’s warming up and I’m spending a lot more […]]]> 5 Real Talk Real Moms | Choosing Childcare Fri, 17 Mar 2017 14:10:51 +0000 It’s that time again…time to have some real talk about motherhood. I’m joining in with several other mamas to talk about an often stressful topic: choosing childcare. It’s never easy to find someone you trust enough to watch your child, but it’s essential for all of us at one point or another, especially when you work. Since I work for myself, I’ve had more flexibility than most, but a consistent childcare solution has been essential as I’ve launched and started to grow my business. Jack was a baby who never took a bottle (we tried so hard!!), which made any kind of childcare impossible for much of the first year. My work when he was really little wasn’t too taxing so I wasn’t in need of help right away. He was a great sleeper, which meant I could really get a lot done while he napped, and I didn’t start looking for regular help (other than monitor-watching for date nights) until he was about 15 months. At that point, we got incredibly lucky. Our neighbors told us their 19-year-old cousin was moving in with them to go to school nearby and that she was looking for babysitting/nanny jobs. I immediately […]]]> 5 A Day in Coronado Mon, 13 Mar 2017 16:55:20 +0000 Despite living in San Diego for almost a decade, I hadn’t been to Coronado in about 6 years and honestly had never fully experienced it. Yesterday when we woke up Brian got the idea for us to drive down there and spend the morning exploring and I thought it sounded like a great family adventure. The original plan was to stay until around lunch time, then head home for Jack’s nap, but on the drive over there we quickly agreed to skip his nap and make a whole day out of it. Food Like every great weekend day, we started the day off with brunch! We didn’t have a plan, so when we arrived we decided to park near the Hotel del Coronado and just walk around from there. We were there so early that parking was not a problem, haha. We found a few good spots on Yelp, and settled on Leroy’s Kitchen because the menu looked amazing. When we got there we realized we still had 15 minutes until they opened, so we passed the time by going to a nearby bookstore and finding a fun little toy to entertain Jack while we ate. Leroy’s absolutely did not disappoint. While I do love chilly weather, I’m not hating the fact that the days are getting longer and daylight savings is happening SO SOON. Entertaining a toddler before bedtime when it’s dark is really not my idea of a good time. Hope you have a great weekend and get to spend time doing what you love with those you love the most! I do have more clothing than this (my wardrobe isn’t as minimalist as I’d like it to be yet!), but these are 30 of the things I reach for over and over and rely on heavily week after week. These staples are all neutral (I hate wearing color!) and they are perfect for my casual lifestyle. I don’t work in an office and am on mom duty 90% of the time, so I wear things that are comfortable and can easily be cleaned and keep a few items around that can easily take a casual outfit to a date night/girls’ night outfit. Not included on this list are accessories—hats, bags, jewelry—but they are really essential in a minimalist wardrobe so don’t forget to wear them! We’ll have to dedicate another post to my favorites of those, but I’ll tell you now that a wide brim fedora, a leather crossbody and a long necklace are all in my regular rotation. Okay, now let’s get to it. Linked below are items that are either what I have in my […]]]> 5 Leopard Loafers Mon, 06 Mar 2017 22:19:21 +0000 Black. Tan. Denim. Leopard. This is a combination that will always work, people! I got these calf hair loafers for Christmas and they are such a perfect accent to my otherwise very basic wardrobe. I love that they work with any neutral—even a striped top—and of course the fact that they’re flat and comfortable makes them perfect mom shoes. As far as the top goes, I love the way a small detail can make a simple top interesting and modern. One of those details I am a sucker for over and over again is a button-back top. Whether the buttons functionally unbutton to allow for a more billowy silhouette, or, in this case, just make an otherwise conservative top a little sexier, it’s a win for me every time. The one I’m wearing is sadly sold out, but there’s a very similar one in white available on sale that I’ve linked to below ;) • • • Liked today’s outfit? It’s honestly one of my all-time favorite outfit combos. I love the way the monochromatic look elongates my not-so-tall body, and I really appreciate the fact that denim is basically kid-proof. It is the ultimate mom fabric! I feel both chic and invincible whenever I wear a version of this outfit, which is probably why I reach for it over and over. To update my usual take on it, I added a bandana—my new favorite accessory—as well as my favorite block-heeled sandals. • • • Liked today’s outfit?
