How to Make Cold Brew Coffee Ice Cubes


One thing is for sure: I love coffee! The funny thing is, I don’t even drink it for the caffeine. In fact, since I’m still nursing Jack, I always go for decaf if possible because I’m paranoid about it messing with his sleep. I just love the taste!

In the summertime I tend to go for iced over hot (for obvious reasons), but I’m sort of a slow sipper and I hate it when my coffee gets all watered down as the ice cubes melt. So you can imagine the lightbulb moment I had when I realized I could make coffee ice cubes and solve all of my problems. Well, my iced coffee problems at least.

Though you can absolutely just make coffee ice cubes with regular coffee, this recipe is for cold brew. Since you want the coffee cold anyway—ultimately, frozen—it tastes better to brew it cold than to cool down hot coffee, which can leave a bitter taste. Below is the recipe I used to make these cubes, plus 3 serving ideas!











French press (or a pitcher and a nut milk bag or cheese cloth for straining)
2/3 to 1 cup medium-to-course ground coffee (feel free to experiment)
3 cups filtered water
Silicone ice cube tray

In your French press or pitcher, mix the ground coffee and water together. If using a French press, keep the plunger in the upright position. If using a pitcher, just cover it. Chill in the refrigerator overnight (or for 12 hours).

After letting it sit in the refrigerator, strain using the plunger on the French press or using a nut milk bag or doubled up cheese cloth to separate the coffee from the grinds.

Pour the brew into your silicone ice cube trays and freeze.

1. The non-melty iced coffee // Make your iced coffee as usual—coffee, milk, etc—but replace your cubes with these so it stays nice and strong as you sip on it.

2. Easy peasy “latte” // Just pop a bunch of cubes into a cup and pour your favorite milk over it. As the ice melts, your latte gets stronger. Obviously use more cubes for a stronger cup and less for a weaker one.

3. Coffee shake // Making a shake or smoothie that could use a little coffee taste? Use these cubes instead of regular ones!
