Ask Natalie // No. 3

Ask Natalie is back! And I’m so excited to be doing it in written form. There were all kinds of awesome questions to choose from—it was hard to pick! Below are answers to three of them.

Have a question you’d like me to answer in a future Ask Natalie post? Leave it in the comments below ;)

“I emailed you a couple months ago and I am not sure if my question was too impertinent, but I am still wondering when and if your readers will get to see baby Jack…? The only glimpses we ever get of him are his feet. Just wondering if you will continue to keep him under wraps (literally and figuratively) :)” —Carissa

Great question! I wanted to make sure to tackle this one right away because it’s a question I’ve been asked A LOT since I had Jack. As soon as I found out I was pregnant last year, Brian and I began having conversations about social media and my public life and whether or not we wanted Jack to be part of that. While I totally support all of my friends and fellow bloggers who share photos of their kids, keeping photos of Jack private is something we’ve decided to do for now. I don’t know if it’ll be our forever decision, but it feels like the right thing to us. With all of my life out there for public consumption, it’s really been wonderful to have this one precious thing be private. Although it really is SO HARD to keep his adorable face to myself. Want to know what he looks like? Picture the chunkiest, blue-eyed angel face you can imagine and there you have it. He’s absolutely delicious. Maybe one day I’ll indulge everyone’s curiosity, but for now it’s pretty much just baby toes :)

“You always look so fresh and glowing! What is your current skincare routine? Any must have products you currently use?” —Alicia

Girl, you just made my day! Thanks for your kind words :) Between years of struggling with eczema and then all of those pregnancy and now postpartum hormones, my skin has been all over the place. But one thing has stayed the same: a very simple skin care routine. At night, I start by removing mascara with eye makeup remover. Then I wipe my face clean with a wet wash cloth and moisturize with oil. I currently avocado oil because it’s cheaper, though I also love argan oil! In the morning, I do the same thing, minus the makeup remover obviously. And that’s it!

More important than products, I think, is nutrition—drinking lots of water and eating nutritious foods like fruits and veggies. I swear, it really does make a huge impact and give skin that healthy glow! That being said, I’ve also been known to fake the glow with the Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity Highlighter Stick.

“Any tips in nap time/schedule for the little one? My 13 week old is not a good napper at all (30 min) max! And it’s a struggle to put him down…then he gets overtired and goes nuts! —@mkoujkian on Instagram

Sleeeeeeeep. Every new mom needs it and ever baby avoids it. Thankfully we’ve had some success in this area as of late, thanks to the tips in the book The Happy Sleeper. While I think everyone should take baby/parenting advice with a grain of salt, we’ve been applying their recommendations to Jack’s sleep life and it’s been working really well! In a nutshell, it’s all about anticipating when they’ll need a nap (they recommend a baby under 5-6 months only being awake for about 90 minutes to 2 hours between naps) and helping your little one learn to fall asleep on his own by laying him down in his crib awake. There are all kinds of specifics in there, of course, so I highly recommend giving it a read!

Natalie, I think it’s great decision that you and your husband made by keeping Jack off social media. It’s a refreshing choice you made and maybe it will inspire others to re-think what they put on social media. Keeping a little mystery is always a good thing!

Ooo, I really like this series. It’s fun to get a taste of you in a more informal, almost like responding-to-a-friend-via-email kind of way — fresh, off-the-cuff. Love it! Looking forward to more!

So no face wash? Maybe I should try your method. I love how simple it is! Do you wear any kind of face makeup?

Hi Natalie! My husband and I are planning to extend a business trip (for him) a couple days to explore San Diego. I already have your brunch at Solace & the Midnight Lounge recommendation on our list! I would so appreciate you sharing your favorite coffee shops and restaurants and any other spots that are must-hit places. THANK YOU!
