Warm Weather Packing Essentials

This weekend, Brian and I are headed to my parents’ house just outside of Palm Springs. Though the weather has been very spring-like here in San Diego, it’s very much summer already in the California desert—it’s supposed to get up to 90 while we’re there! With hot, hot temperatures like that, I’m channeling my summer mindset and packing light, breezy things to keep myself cool while soaking up the sun.

Just in case you have a warm weather getaway coming up (I sure hope you do!), I thought I’d put together a list of my essentials to make your life a little simpler when it comes time to pack…

Bandeau Bikini
I always like to pack a bandeau top for trips like this, where I’ll be lounging by the pool and working on my tan. This will be my first chance to wear my brand new navy monogrammed RahRah Designs Bikini, which I adore because it’s so personalized and classic, but Target also has some seriously cute (and inexpensive) mix and match bandeau bikinis, too.

Woven Hat
Based on my face shape and the size of my head, I’m pretty partial to fedora hats, but a panama hat or floppy hat is perfect if that’s more your style.

Light + Breezy Dresses
Though I sometimes pack a pair of shorts, more often than not if I’m just away for an especially toasty weekend, I opt for dresses, which are both easy to pack and comfy to wear. I love the way they easily transition from day to night, too.

What’s a warm weather getaway without sandals? I love, love, love simple t-strap sandals (mine are all from my favorite place—Target!), though I also adore a basic flip flop. Since sandals are so small, I usually pack two pairs for the weekend for variety.

Workout Clothes
Just because it’s hot doesn’t mean I skip my workout. In fact, Brian and I usually love the chance to workout together on the weekends whether we’re away or not, so I always make sure to pack something fitnessy. For a weekend like this, when the sun is going to be scorching by 9am, I pack my favorite lululemon running shorts, a racerback tank, sports bra and my Nike Free running shoes. And of course, I make sure we’re out the door before it gets too hot!

Tortoise Sunglasses
Why tortoise? It’s a classic and timeless pattern that goes with everything. I tend to prefer inexpensive frames so I don’t feel bad if I lose them or leave them somewhere, but if I were to spend a bit more on frames, I’d go for Warby Parker.

Toiletries + Makeup
SUNBLOCK: After trying nearly every kind out there, I’ve become loyal to Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock. It has a really nice finish that doesn’t feel like sunblock at all.

DRY SHAMPOO: When I’m on vacation I usually like to put off washing my hair for as long as possible. My current favorite is Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo because it’s paraben-free, smells amazing and gets the job done. Another favorite of mine is Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo.

CONDITIONER: Time in the sun makes my already dry hair feel like straw, so I always like to pack a travel size bottle of good quality conditioner for the point in the weekend when I finally wash my hair. I am constantly trying new ones, so I don’t have an all-time favorite, but this weekend I’m thinking about bringing my Bumble & Bumble Surf Creme Rinse Conditioner.

MAKEUP: I really like to keep it simple for trips like this, often just brushing on some bronzer/blush after applying sunscreen and giving my eyelashes a quick curl. For nighttime, I might add mascara but that’s about it.

LIP BALM: Lips can get burns, too! I really love the Kiss My Face brand—they have so many fun flavors (like coconut pineapple and sliced peach) that come with SPF 15 and don’t look sunscreeny on your lips.

What about you—what are your warm weather packing essentials?

I love that sunblock – personal favourite. And oh those RahRah bathing suits – reason enough to book a trip.

Very curious about the conditioner. The link doesn’t quite work. Available at Sephora?

As you’re heading out to Palm Springs, my hubby and I are planning a trip to San Diego for 6 nights. Any local recommendations on must-do’s?

    Loved this post! :)

Yes! I love my RahRah suit so much :) I just checked the link on the conditioner and it’s working for me! Maybe try this: http://bit.ly/1iSHYIR

As far as San Diego goes, I’d recommend hanging out in La Jolla a bit—so beautiful! Also, spend as much time by the coast as you can :)

I am a huge fan of Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm in grapefruit & ginger for warm weather travel (http://www.sephora.com/intense-therapy-lip-balm-spf-25-P12573?skuId=564344) – it’s SPF 25 and totally does the trick when I’m in the sun. It looks like a light gloss and smells great, but actually protects my dry lips from sunburn!

I also love Susana Monaco dresses for travel, especially the blouson tank dress (http://www.6pm.com/susana-monaco-blouson-tank-dress). The fit is very flattering, doesn’t wrinkle, cute but not too low cut, and the length is not too long for my 5′ 5″ frame, plus it’s made in the USA. With Canfora flat sandals it’s my go to day/night travel outfit.

Oh, I love Jack Black products! I’ve never tried that one, though, so I’ll have to pick it up the next time I’m at Sephora—thanks for sharing!
