Beauty Icon: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy

After reading What Remains, I absolutely fell in love with Carolyn Bessette Kennedy all over again. A little known fact: I met her on a beach in Big Sur while she and John were celebrating their first anniversary, and she was as kind and beautiful as you might imagine. Below is a piece I did on her classic makeup look for Glitter Guide this week—a look I personally adore and strive for myself!

Known for her smooth golden locks, fresh face and minimalist style, the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy was a timeless beauty and a true fashion icon. Her makeup mirrored her style in many ways—clean, simple and fuss-free.

To recreate her look, keep skin as healthy-looking as possible. If you can wear it bare, go for it! If you need a little extra coverage, use BB cream to achieve her classic fresh-faced look. Make sure your eyebrows are well-groomed, and stick with really clean lids—skipping the eyeshadow and liner altogether, or choosing a shadow that’s close to your skin tone. Add a coat or two of quality mascara. Finish off the face with a ruby red shade of lipstick—a signature look of hers!

Get her look:

>> Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara ($22)

I’ve never been able to understand the media carryings-on about Carolyn’s “style icon” status, “beauty,” and “effortless chic.”

I think she was simply trying too hard. She looked wonderful in her high school yearbook picture. She was slightly heavier, with naturally wavy hair that was light brown in color. But at a very unnatural 5’11” and 120 lbs., with overplucked eyebrows, blown-out platinum hair, and that horrid red lipstick, not so much.

And as for her fashion sense–how hard can it be to get dressed when everything you own is black?

A totally overrated celebrity in my view.
