Self-Care Update | Month 1

One month of the year has officially passed—how’s everyone doing on their resolutions/intentions/themes for the year? My focus this year is self-care and to hold me accountable to keep on pursuing it, I’m hoping to do regular updates here to share how it’s going. I spent the majority of January sick with a never-ending cold, which really just proved to me how much I’ve been neglecting self-care. Jack and Brian didn’t even get sick, so it’s pretty clear whose immune system is the weakest around here! Other than resting to keep my cold from getting any worse, here are a few ways I’ve been practicing self-care over the past month: 

Nutritious lunches

Instead of my old staple of cheese and crackers, I’ve committed to eating more nutrient dense meals during the day. Lately that’s been HUGE salads (with nuts and fruit and avocado) or a hearty soup like lentil or vegetarian chili. Also, I’m getting better about taking my vitamins!

A restful, consistent nighttime routine

To help me get more restorative sleep (a cornerstone of self-care for sure), I realized my evening routine needed to set me up for success. First, I have a nightly skin care routine I follow that has become really relaxing (micellar water / serum / cleansing balm as an overnight mask). Once I’ve done that and brushed my teeth, I spray an essential oil spray on my sheets and pillow and grab a book for 5-10 minutes of reading (or more if I’m not that tired). I’ve also moved my phone charger into the bathroom so I’m not tempted to scroll Instagram or read email before bed.

Hydration

For every cup of coffee, I’m drinking a full glass of water (on top of the water I normally drink). I also have tried to replace some of my daily coffee with green tea or herbal tea to reduce my caffeine consumption on days I don’t really need it.

    My goal (more like Word of the Year) is growth… First up, was personal growth… eating better, making time for Jesus & self care. Still working on that, but I’m getting there. I’m also trying to grow my business, & am starting to plan (& write!) blog posts a month in advance. It’s all a work in progress… learning how I work best so that I can use my strengths to build my weaknesses. The month of January was definitely full of growth, & I’m already looking forward to February!!!

    Natalie – i use to make my resolutions public too but im learning they are private matters (for me anyway). Ive learned to only share with my most treasured and closest friends. They are sacred and holy matters. 1000 gifts. Much love on your journey.

      Totally get that—for some it’s better to keep them private! As a blogger, sharing my journey is pretty much part of the gig and I love letting you all in on progress, lessons learned, etc. Hope it can provide everyone with some ideas for better self-care this year, even if that’s not their specific focus of the year.

    I’m sharing monthly updates of my goals as well to hold me more accountable. I actually did pretty well in January, so I’m hoping to keep it up for the remainder of the year!

    My word this year is “contentment” and I’m choosing one aspect of my life to focus on each month. January was my routines and February is my relationships. So far it’s been a really great way to stay focused!
