Despite the fact that we’ve lived in our house for over a year now, I haven’t shared a ton with you about our space. Blame it on the perfectionist in me, but I just can’t bring myself to snap photos and share them until I feel like everything is done. I can, however, share my plans with you for the different ways I plan to make our house feel completely ours.
Exhibition number one: our backyard. When we first moved in, my parents so generously gifted us a landscaped backyard (as shown above) since what was there was pretty sad looking. It’s been wonderful to have so far and having it as a baseline has helped us figure out exactly what we’re hoping for in the long run.
Our biggest concerns long-term are these:
1. Having a comfortable place to sit and sip coffee in the morning
2. Creating a space that promotes conversation and connectedness when people come over
3. Ensuring that it looks really pretty :)
So, with that in mind, here are our big ideas for change in 2014…
COMFY SEATING + NICE COFFEE TABLE
This is our number one priority. So much so, that we went ahead and ordered the furniture last week!! We looked at several different sets from West Elm, Home Depot and Target, but ultimately settled on this dreamy conversation set by Threshold. I love the wicker look with the light, comfy cushions. And I’m really into the coffee table it comes with—it doesn’t look cheap or cheesy like a lot of the other sets we were looking at.
OUTDOOR AREA RUG + THROW PILLOWS
This is super important to me, as I feel like it really designates the space and makes it feel cozy like an outdoor living room. I love the idea of black and white rugby stripes, but am open to other neutral geometrics (like this one, shown below), and even natural fibers. The biggest thing will be finding something that fits with our style, matches the seating set, and isn’t too pricey. Also, I’m definitely going to invest in pretty throw pillows for the outdoor furniture to make it feel even more cozy and homey.
OUTDOOR BAR + SEATS
We actually hadn’t even thought of this until we were at Target the other day, scoping out the new seating set we purchased. Sitting on the love seat that would soon be ours, we looked to our right and spotted a bar set that we knew would work perfectly in our backyard.
Will you be making any changes in your home this year? What are your plans?
